Nile Day is held every 22 February to celebrate the formation of the Nile Basin
Initiative (NBI) in 1999, by the Council of Ministers in charge of Water
Affairs of the Nile Basin Countries of Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo,
Egypt, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Sudan, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda. This was

On a lighter note, Nile Day provides an opportunity to celebrate the glories of the rich and varied culture which exists in the River Nile Basin region, in addition to providing an opportunity to come together and to learn more about the River Nile Basin and its heritage.
The theme for this year’s celebration is: Nurturing 10 Years of Cooperation and Progress. The Nile Basin Initiative is organizing a two-day event from 21st to 22nd February 2010, in conjunction with the government of Uganda - the host country for this year’s Regional celebrations in Kabale district (Southwestern Uganda). At the same time, National celebrations are planned to take place in each of the NBI Member States. Uganda’s Minister of Agriculture Animal Industry and Fisheries, Hon. Hope Mwesigye will officiate at the Regional celebrations in Kabale district. Activities will include: A procession in Kabale town led by a brass band, a football match, Commissioning of the Katuna Water Supply System constructed by one of the Nile Basin Initiative Projects – the Kagera River Basin Management Project as well as the Nile Media Awards 2009 prize giving ceremony. |
