KABALE, Uganda – The winners of the 2009 Nile Media Awards were announced today at a well attended award ceremony and luncheon held at the White Horse Inn, Kabale district in South western Uganda.
The Regional Award recognizes journalists for outstanding reporting on Nile Basin issues and the work of the Nile Basin Initiative (NBI). Entries focusing on gender issues in NBI’s work and activities in the Nile Basin in general are given special consideration. The ceremony, which was attended by delegates from NBI Member States, Development Partners, civil society, representatives of the Nile Media Network National Chapters as well as staff of the Nile Basin Initiative was held in conjunction with this year‘s Nile Day Regional celebrations, held annually on 22 February.
Hon. Hope Mwsigye, Uganda’s Minister of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries handed over the awards in form of monetary prizes and trophies. David Malingha-Doya from Uganda won the first prize; the second prize was given to Kenya’s Joseph Ngome and the third to Cosmas Butunyi also from Kenya.
The Nile Media Awards were introduced by the Nile Basin Initiative last year 2009. Journalists from both the print and electronic media from the nine Nile Basin Initiative Member States of Burundi, DR Congo, Egypt, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda were invited to compete for the awards. |
