Meet the incoming Executive Director, Dr. Wael Khairy
Dr. Wael Mohamed Khairy
During the 18th ordinary Nile Council of Ministers’ meeting recently (26-27 June, 2010) held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, the Ministers approved Egypt’s proposal for the incoming Executive Director of the Nile Basin Initiative (NBI) Secretariat. Dr. Wael M. Khairy,
Dr. Khairy has gained experience during his career for more than 19
years (1990-present) in various water resources and development as well
as environmental Engineering related fields. He works as a Director of
the National Office of Egypt, Nile Basin Initiative in which he manages
-as a National Focal Point- the planning and preparation of all regional
projects/programs under the umbrella of the Nile Basin Initiative
inside Egypt and coordinates for those projects region-wide among other
NFPs in the nine Nile riparian countries as well as the NBI secretariat.
He participated in a number of water resources modeling and management projects, engineering research studies, and scientific experiments with academic, governmental, private, and international institutions. Dr. Khairy gained instructional and technical experiences in environmental engineering, pollution control, drainage water management and evaluation, risk assessment, environmental modeling, climate change, and environmental impact assessment through his career as Research Associate Professor with the National Water Research Center (NWRC) in Cairo, Egypt; and in the past with University of New Orleans (UNO), New Orleans, Louisiana; and Alabama A & M University (AAMU) in Huntsville, Alabama, USA, respectively for 14 years (1991-2004). Dr. Khairy worked as Director for Information and Technology (2004-2007) at the Minister’s Office, Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation of Egypt. Currently, Dr. Khairy represents Egypt in the NILE-TAC & ENSAPT of the Nile Basin Initiative (2007-present).
