ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia - The Nile Council of Ministers (NILE-COM) in charge of Water Affairs from the nine Nile Basin Initiative (NBI) member countries has successfully concluded its 18th ordinary meeting in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
The purpose of the two day (26-27 June) meeting organized under the theme: ‘Working together for a better future’ was to review progress of the activities of NBI and approve the work plan and budget for the fiscal year 2010/2011. This is in addition to announcing changes in the positions of NILE-COM chair and Executive Director of the NBI Secretariat, respectively.

noted that “our huge untapped potential of resources, over 300 million
strong citizens and the important markets of the nine countries call for
cooperation”.
Later, Egypt’s Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation H.E. Dr. Mohamed Nasr el Din Allam handed over the chairmanship of the Nile Council of Ministers to Ethiopia’s Minister of Water Resources, H.E. Asfaw Dingamo effective June 2010. The Ministers considered and approved NBI’s work plan for the fiscal year 2010/2011 with a total financial resource of US$11,271,862 under the Institutional Strengthening Project (ISP). The funding is provided from the Nile Basin Trust Fund (NBTF), member countries’ contributions, GTZ and other financial resources. NILE-COM members also approved Egypt’s proposal of the incoming Executive Director of the NBI Secretariat. Dr. Wael M. Khairy, will take over from Ms. Henriette Ndombe of DR Congo effective September 2010. The Ministers agreed to convene an extra-ordinary meeting following a proposal from Egypt and Sudan to discuss legal implications of the recent signing of the Nile River Cooperative Framework Agreement (CFA) by Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda. |
